Full-time programmes in Slovak at public universities are free whatever your nationality, while programmes in English cost €500–12,200 a year according to SAIA. Slovakia has 20 public, 3 state and 11 private institutions with more than 5,000 programmes, and a minimum budget is around €350 a month. Learn when to apply, how your school certificate is recognised and how many hours you can work while studying.
Programmes are usually taught in Slovak. Universities also offer programmes in other languages – most often in English, sometimes in Hungarian, French, German or Russian. SAIA publishes a list of programmes taught in foreign languages in its brochure “Study in Slovakia: Study Programmes Offered in Foreign Languages”.
If you speak another Slavic language, Slovak will come more easily, but the faculty may ask you to prove your Slovak – check before you apply. For programmes in English you will usually need IELTS or TOEFL; the university sets the required score.
