EU/EEA citizens can study tuition-free on state-funded places in Hungarian-taught programmes; English-taught ones charge fees set by each university, and students from partner countries outside the EU can have tuition covered by Stipendium Hungaricum. Hungary's 65 institutions offer more than 1,000 programmes in several languages. See how to apply, what a month costs (around €500–600) and how many hours you can work.
EU/EEA and Swiss citizens do not need a visa – you enter with a valid ID card or passport. If you stay longer than 90 days, you must register:
Students from outside the EU/EEA need a residence permit for the purpose of studies. You apply at the Hungarian embassy or consulate in your home country or country of residence before you travel. If you can enter Hungary without a visa, you can also apply in Hungary – online through the Enter Hungary platform or in person at a regional office of the Directorate-General. The permit is issued for at least one year (or the length of the course, if shorter) and at most three years, and can be extended. You must show that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay and for your return, and that you have health insurance. The fee is €110 at a consulate or HUF 24,000 through Enter Hungary.
Health insurance: if you are insured in another EU country, your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) covers you in Hungary, with the same rights as Hungarians. For non-EU students, health insurance is a condition of the residence permit.
