EU citizens pay the same fees as Bulgarians – at the Medical University of Varna, medicine in Bulgarian costs €800 for the first year on a state-funded place, while medicine in English is around €10,000 a year. In 2023/24 there were 15,100 international students, and since 1 January 2026 Bulgaria has used the euro. Read how to apply directly to a university and whether €500–900 a month covers your budget.
EU citizens pay on the same terms as Bulgarian students. Public institutions have state-funded places (държавна поръчка) with a low annual fee and fee-paying places. The fees are set by the government at the institution's proposal. Students on state-funded places in fields with the greatest expected labour-market shortages are exempt from fees.
Example – Medical University of Varna, medicine in Bulgarian in 2026/27 (Bulgarian and EU citizens): €800 for the first year on a state-funded place, €9,100 on a fee-paying place.
Medicine in English is fee-paying – annual fees in 2026/27:
Study in Europe gives general tuition fees of €562–5,360 a year for bachelor's and €1,945–5,360 for master's programmes. Students from outside the EU pay more than Bulgarian students. Note: the current Study in Europe profile of Bulgaria does not distinguish fees for EU and non-EU students, and the Medical University of Sofia charges both groups the same – check the fee with your chosen institution before you apply.
