Bulgaria

Country: Bulgaria

EU citizens pay the same fees as Bulgarians – at the Medical University of Varna, medicine in Bulgarian costs €800 for the first year on a state-funded place, while medicine in English is around €10,000 a year. In 2023/24 there were 15,100 international students, and since 1 January 2026 Bulgaria has used the euro. Read how to apply directly to a university and whether €500–900 a month covers your budget.

There are few scholarships for a full degree in Bulgaria for international students. Study in Europe lists:

  • state scholarships and scholarships under bilateral agreements between Bulgaria and other countries,
  • university scholarships – ask the student affairs office at your institution,
  • Erasmus+ – a semester or year in Bulgaria as part of an exchange with your home university,
  • CEEPUS – the Central European exchange programme for universities.

As an EU citizen you can also study on a state-funded place on the same terms as Bulgarian students – in practice the cheapest way to a degree.
