Nearly 90% internet users in Poland have visited social media websites in January 2013, according to a survey by researcher Gemius. Social media services help maintain the so-called weak relationships, experts say.

According to Gemius, 17.33 million, or 89.56 percent of Polish internet users visited social media websites at least once in January 2013. Men constitute 49.51 percent and women 51.49 percent of the group.

"Social media facilitate maintaining the so-called weak relations. They are not contacts with the family or close friends, but rather relations that would be difficult to keep without such networks," said Dominik Batorski, a sociologist of the University of Warsaw.

The Polish social media user is mostly between 15 and 24 years old (25 pct) or between 25 and 34 years of age (25.86 pct). 36.33 percent possess secondary and 24.12 percent higher education diplomas.

The most popular social network in Poland is Facebook (13.75 million users in January 2013), followed by Nasza Klasa (8.06 million), Chomikuj.pl (6.70 million) and Google+ (3.02 million).
