Summer Redneck Games

The Redneck Games first appeared in 1996. The folk of East Dublin have warmly embraced their "traditional" cultural heritage and flocked to the tongue-in-cheek event at Buckeye Park in droves ever since.

Perhaps the most eye-catching event of the games is the Mud-Pit Belly Flop, where fully clothed contestants plunge belly first into a natural pool of red clay mud. The bigger the belly, the better your chance, as the winning flopper tends to weigh in at over 250 pounds and key criteria for the judges are beauty of form and size of splash...

Other disciplines include the self-explanatory Hubcap Hurl and the stomach-churning Bobbing for Pig's Feet. Similar to the kiddies' Halloween favourite, this involves seven slowly defrosting raw pig's trotters and a shoulder-deep bobbing bucket. Reassuringly resting in water rather than pigs' blood, one crucial difference is that, unlike apples, pigs' feet don't float...

Other delights include the Dumpster Dive (where contestants dive into a garbage-packed dumpster and try to find a holiday prize paper) and the Armpit Serenade. Children normally win this event, as smooth-skinned pits tend to give off a truer "wind" sound.
