Roméo et Juliette at the Garden
Gounod's Roméo et Juliette returns to the Royal Opera Covent Garden in Nicolas Joël's wonderful production, not seen here since the 1990s. Daniel Oren conducts tenor Piotr Beczala as Roméo, with Nino Machaidze and María Alejandres sharing Juliette.
Gounod's 1867 opera Roméo et Juliette (eight years after his version of Goethe's Faust,
which has just opened English National Opera's season) takes some
liberties with Shakespeare's original. Perhaps the most far-reaching is
delaying Romeo's death until after Juliet wakes from her drug-induced
sleep. There is time for one last rapt duet, before he dies and she
takes her own life.
The cast includes Stéphane Degout (Mercutio),
Alfie Boe (Tybalt), Ketevan Kemoklidze (Stéphano), ZhengZhong Zhou
(Paris), Vitalij Kowaljow (Frére Laurent), James Cleverton (Grégorio),
Diana Montague (Gertrude), Darren Jeffery (Capulet) and Simon Neal (Duke
of Verona).
