FIS Men's Alpine Skiing World Cup: Bormio
Bormio, in the Italian Dolomites, hosts the latest round of the men's World Cup, featuring a downhill competition. Originally there were many skiing competitions throughout the world, but in 1962 the FIS created a unified competition.
All the best skiers now compete for the FIS Alpine World Cup, travelling
the world to premier ski resorts to gather points as they go. There are
separate awards for the individual disciplines, but the Holy Grail is
the title of Alpine World Cup Overall Champion.
The tournament is
divided into the Ladies' and Men's events and the individual
disciplines are downhill, slalom, giant slalom, super G and combined,
ensuring that every attribute of modern skiing technique is thoroughly
tested. To win the combined title, therefore, is the mark of a truly
accomplished skier.
