Granada Reconquest Festival
The whole city celebrates the Granada Reconquest Festival, to remember when the Christians triumphed over the Moors in 1492. This historical moment shaped Granada forever and is known by locals as El Día de la Toma (literally Capture Day).
On 2 January, 1492, King Boabdil handed over the keys to the Alhambra
Palace to the Catholic monarchs Isabel and Fernando. To symbolise the
reconquest, Queen Isabel's confessor, Hernando de Talavera, gave the
first Mass, raised the cross and flew the flag of Castille from the
palace's bell tower, the Torre de Vela. Today, this significant
event is remembered with a service in the Capilla Real, followed by a
religious procession to the Ayuntamiento, where a flag is raised in
honour of King Fernando and Queen Isabel.
