Wianki nad Wisla

Wianki nad Wisla (literally "wreaths on the Vistula") commemorates the midsummer with a day-long picnic by Warsaw's river Vistula. Thousands come to soak up the sun and take part in the traditional releasing of thousands of wreaths into the river.

The Wianki nad Wisla harks back to Pagan times, when Slavic communities marked midsummer day (known in Poland as Kupala) with festivities. Nowadays the festival is much more large-scale, and includes concerts and firework displays.

Special guests at the 2010 Wianki nad Wisla celebrations are Swedish rock band Europe, who are performing to the thousands of celebrants in the evening.
