Schlitteda Engiadinaisa
St Moritz's Schlitteda Engiadinaisa is for anyone who dreams of sleighing through wintry landscapes. The locals dig out the old sleighs, don their traditional clothes, look for a good horse and join in a procession accompanied by folk dancers.
On the day of the procession, a fortunate (or unfortunate) woman is
picked up by each of the riders, and in order not to fall off the sleigh
when the young bucks are dashing through the snow, clings tightly to
her driver's back.
The Schlitteda (found in other
villages of the region as well) is an old tradition, still taken very
seriously by the locals of the Engadine. The horses and sleighs are
beautifully decorated and it is the perfect occasion on which to see the
traditional clothes of the region.
