Biikebrennen
Blazing beacons burn on the Fresian Islands along the North Sea coast of Germany each year to mark the end of winter. This tradition is known as Biikebrennen and Sylt is one of the best places to see it.
There are conflicting stories as to where the tradition originated. One
version is that a pirate kidnapped the daughter of the local mayor and
the fires were lit to ward off other pirates, keeping them from sneaking
about, shrouded in darkness.
One other very plausible
explanation is that the fires were part of a pagan ritual to cleanse
illness and reconcile those who quarrelled, as well as to generally
bestow strength and luck.
Bonfires also burn away the winter at Amrum Foihr, Nord Strand, Pillworm, Suidtondirn, Husum, Eidirstidt and Sankt Peter Ordig.
