Scottish Opera in Orlando

Scottish Opera opens Harry Fehr's new production of Handel's Orlando at home at the Theatre Royal, conducted by Paul Goodwin. Tim Mead stars in the title role with Sally Silver (Angelica), Andrew Radley (Medoro), Claire Booth (Dorinda) and Andreas Wolf (Zoroastro).

Composed nearly 300 years ago, based on Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, Handel's Orlando premièred in 1733 at London's King's Theatre. Despite sorcerer Zoroastro's warnings against carnal desires (as opposed to noble deeds), our hero Orlando pursues Angelica who, in turn, loves Medoro.

But while returning Angelica's love, Medoro - unfortunately - already has a shepherdess who loves him, Dorinda. Through natural emotions (as poignant as heartache and devious as manipulation) and some supernatural intervention Handel weaves his magic spell to bring everything to a harmonious end.
