Fastnachtszug

Frankfurt's Fastnachtszug carnival parade leaves the Untermainkai and works its way around the city centre, celebrating winter's end in a blaze of colour, music and festivity. Jovial court jesters (Narro), frightening scarecrows (Strohmann) and hunch-backed witches entertain the crowds.

The carnival has a long history dating back to the 14th century, with Frankfurt's Fastnachtszug parade symbolising man's struggle against the evil winter spirits and the welcoming of a bountiful and prosperous summer.
