Día de Los Indianos
Santa Cruz de La Palma celebrates Carnival Monday with a rather unusual pre-Lenten tradition. During the Día de los Indianos (Day of the Indians), crowds of around 60,000 take to the streets for an immense talcum powder fight.
The Día de los Indianos harks back to the 1960s, when an enormous wave
of islanders emigrated from La Palma to find work in Cuba. When the rich
emigrants returned to their home country they wore white clothes and
panama hats - outfits which are copied and worn for today's
celebrations.
Catch the liveliest talcum powder action on O'Daly
and Pérez de Brito streets. Tourists tend to be particular targets, so
it might be wise to leave the designer labels at home! A disposable
camera might be a good idea too...
