Defenders of the Motherland Day
Solemn wreath-laying at Moscow's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, under the walls of the Kremlin, commemorate Russia's Defenders of the Motherland Day, always held on 23 February. Afterwards, the monument is surrounded with a spectacular carpet of flowers.
Originally Soviet Army Day, celebrating the formation of the Red Army,
the day has now become known as Men's Day (don't worry, women don't have
to wait too long for their day, it falls on 8 March). Probably because
of that fact it is sometimes also known as Defenders of the Fatherland
Day, and is a Russian public holiday.
