Victory Day
A deeply patriotic affair, the Victory Day holiday is as much about celebrating Soviet victory in the Second World War as remembering Russia's fallen soldiers. A major parade is held on Moscow's Red Square, alongside city-wide concerts, fireworks and remembrances.
At midnight on 8th May 1945 the Second World War was officially declared
over. To commemorate that first day of peace the Russians created a
national holiday called Victory Day, annually celebrated on 9 May.
On
Victory Day, huge crowds bearing bouquets throng Red Square to watch
military marching bands, tank displays and aircraft fly-pasts.
Medal-wearing men and women in their original uniforms meet up to
remember the past, sing, dance to accordion music and shed a few tears.
In the evening, the city is illuminated by firework displays.
