Roskilde Festival
The Roskilde Festival, one of the longest-running and best rock events in Europe, takes over Roskilde in Denmark every year. Continually attracting some of the biggest names in rock, it's one of Denmark's, and Scandinavia's, most raucous annual events.
The festival first took place in 1971 and has grown steadily since, now
attracting around 100,000 people. The event is environmentally aware -
no cans or glass or plastic bottles are allowed on the site, all drinks
are poured in mugs or sold in cartons. All this contributes to the
special atmosphere.
The organisers look to provide fun and
provoke thought - check out the onsite art installations. The festival's
campsite is divided into small areas, each well-equipped so
festival-goers can live, cook, rest, meet up and party in relative
comfort.
Still, whatever the homely provisions on the sidelines,
Roskilde itself remains firmly about rock and 2011 marks a return to
old-school form with Iron Maiden the event's confirmed headline act.
