Race of the Classics
The Race of the Classics sailing challenge starts in Rotterdam, sails via Ostend to Ipswich or Lowestoft (depending on the weather) before re-crossing the North Sea to finish in Amsterdam. The post-Easter race attracts over 20 teams annually.
First held in 1989, the Race is now one of the biggest amateur sailing
races in Europe. Over 20 teams sail across the North Sea to England and
back, competing for the highly prized Challenge Cup.
The race was
instigated by two students at the Amsterdam Academy, with a view to
fostering relations between international financial students and raising
the profile of their institution.
Each year the boats are due in
Suffolk (either Ipswich or Lowestoft) on the Thursday before returning
to Amsterdam, via IJmuiden, for a party on the Sunday.
