I Tri da Cruci
I Tri da Cruci is a folk festival commemorating the end of the Saracens' occupation of Tropea during the Middle Ages. Celebrations culminate with a strange ceremony involving the burning of a wooden mannequin on the back of a camel.
The wooden mannequin evokes the hated figure of the Turkish occupying
forces as they rode from house to house on their camels collecting taxes
and irritating the headstrong and independent Calabrese. With the
eventual defeat and retreat of the Turks, the vanquished enemy was
immortalised in his most hated guise, namely as the tax-collector.
The ceremony, called "dance of the camel", is accompanied by other
events including masses, held in Santa Maria dell'isola church,
fireworks and street performances.
