Festival of Our Lady of the Forsaken

During Valencia's Festival of Our Lady of the Forsaken, swarms of locals follow the street parade of the Virgin statue to the cathedral. The night before a concert takes place on Plaza de la Virgen square, followed by riverside fireworks.

The event honours the city patron, known in Spanish as the Virgen de los Desamparados. Locals have even lovingly nicknamed the virgin La Geperudeta, referring to her slight stoop. On the main festival day at 5am there is an open-air mass in the Royal Chapel, which is followed by a more solemn one at 8am in the Plaza de la Virgen. The procession then commences at 10.30am.
