Snail Festival
Eating snails is not an exclusively Gallic phenomenon, as some 12,000 inhabitants of the Catalonian town of Lleida prove. Every May, locals are joined by gastropod enthusiasts for the Snail Festival, or Aplec del Caragol.
Around 12 tonnes of the exotic mollusc are savoured (along with some
favourite Lleidan sauces) over the three days of the fiesta.
There
is plenty of eating, drinking and dancing on offer, and make sure you
don your most colourful garb - after all, it's not every day that you
get to go to a snail feast. Many of the peñas (groups/gatherings)
are private and so it's best to hook up with some locals to guarantee
an invitation. If you're unlucky, numerous restaurants offer typical
snail dishes.
