Oxi Day
Oxi Day that celebrates the word "no" - Greek style. Commemorating the day Greece rejected Mussolini, the country celebrates with concerts, exhibitions and more. Recognised nationally, you're bound to find a party no matter what part of Greece you're in.
At the start of the Second World War, Mussolini delivered an ultimatum
to the then Greek Prime Minister, Ioannis Metaxas, demanding that Greece
allow Italian troops to occupy the country, or Italy would declare war
and invade.
After hearing of the demands on 28 October 1940, Metaxas rejected the ultimatum and replied with a simple Greek word: Oxi! - (no!). This has since become a Greek battle cry that resurfaces throughout the country every 28 October.
The foundations of the day may be serious, but present-day celebrations
are fun and wide-ranging. Check for specific details relating to your
region in local press and prepare to party!
