Former music director Paul Daniel returns to the London Coliseum for Fiona Shaw's new English National Opera production of Mozart and Da Ponte's The Marriage of Figaro. Ian Patterson, Kate Vlenetine, Roland Wood and more sing Jeremy Sams' English translation.
Shaw cut her operatic teeth at ENO, first with Vaughan Williams' Riders to the Sea and then, at the Young Vic, with Henze's Elegy for Young Lovers. She returns to the theme of young lovers in Mozart's classic comedy, where the Count (Wood) is quite happy to ignore the Countess (Valentine) - although she has plenty of attention from young Cherubino (Kathryn Rudge) - in favour of her maid Susanna.
However, Susanna's fiancé Figaro (Patterson), who had helped the Count win the Countess originally, has something to say about that!
