At public universities EU/EEA students pay €178 a year for a licence and €255 for a master's, while non-EU students pay €2,902 and €3,950 – plus the €105 CVEC (2026/27). Campus France counts more than 3,500 higher education institutions, and since 4 May 2026 a meal in a CROUS canteen costs €1 for all students. Learn how Parcoursup and Mon Master work, what a CROUS room costs and how many hours you may work.
Studies are organised in the LMD system (licence – master – doctorat), in line with the Bologna Process:
Alongside the university path there are shorter professional diplomas, e.g. the BTS (brevet de technicien supérieur), and preparatory classes (classes préparatoires, CPGE), after which students sit the entrance exams for the grandes écoles.
The academic year starts in September or October, and the summer break lasts at least two months. Teaching combines lectures in large halls (amphithéâtre) with compulsory tutorials in small groups that link theory and practice.
