Bulgaria has three types of higher education institutions:

  • universities (университет) – teach many fields at all levels, from bachelor's to doctorate,
  • specialised higher schools – focused on one field of science or the arts,
  • independent colleges (колеж) – offer three-year professional programmes (professional bachelor).

Every institution must be accredited by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency (NEAA). You will find the list in the Ministry of Education and Science's register of higher education institutions. In 2023/24 there were 15,100 international students on bachelor's and master's programmes. Many international applicants choose medicine and dentistry in English – for example at the medical universities in Sofia and Varna.
