The Swedish system has two main types of higher education institutions. According to the European Eurydice network (2024 data), there are:

  • 18 universities (universitet) – they can award degrees at all levels, including doctorates,
  • 12 university colleges (högskolor) – mainly bachelor's and master's programmes, although some can now also award doctorates in selected fields,
  • 5 arts institutions (konstnärliga högskolor) – fine arts, design, performing arts,
  • 14 independent education providers (enskilda utbildningsanordnare) – funded by state grants or run by foundations.

Most institutions are public. The Study in Sweden portal lists 39 universities that together offer more than 1,000 bachelor's and master's programmes in English.
